Job title: Freelance photography/ Events photographer
I worked along side a venue in Manchester, Night and Day Cafe, taking photos of local bands. In conjunction to this one of the regular bands asked me to work with them taking photos out of gig time they could use for posters and flyers etc. This work was my first in freelance photography and I was able to gain a real insight into the career whilst also building on my skills. Working with the band meant I had to get a good understanding of what type of music they played and what type of images they were keen for me to capture. I used my confidence and creativity to produce images the band were extremely pleased with. After seeing my photos on my Flickr I was also contacted by several students and asked to take headshot for their portfolio. I was extremely keen on this job as it meant trying something new and testing my skills. In order to keep my Flickr and portfolio up to date I am always taking new images in creative and unique ways. Also taking Media photography as a module has meant I have been able to test my creativity to create images which would stand out as different and unique, The assignments also meant going out and speaking to new people and taking photographs in new places. The skills I have gained throughout my freelance photography have all been great transferable skills for example organisation to turn up to shoots on time and also negotiation as I negotiate with clients on what they want to what I suggest.
Job Title: Events organiser
Known as a keen organiser to my peers, in my last year at college I was asked to organise a fashion show in order to raise money for a local charity. This was my first experience in organising events and taking control. I had to find the correct room and equipment for the show and also had to organise with the teachers when it would be best for the show to take place so they could be on hand for help. The work was hard yet very enjoyable as I was able to be creative with my ideas and put them all into action to make the show come alive. Within my first year at University my reporting skills where put to use within my Events and exhibition planning module when I was asked to go to an event and write a lengthy report on what I had seen. Focusing on the audience and content of the event I created a report which was to a high standard. In picking the event apart and looking into everything which it entailed I was able to see that there was a huge amount of planning that goes into the event. This then set me up for my second Assignment. The second assignment was the thing which made me realise Events organising was for me. I was asked to create my own events company, working either in a group or solo on the task, I decided to take on the task online even thought I do like group work I thought id be able to put my creativity to the test and see how much I could push myself and grow. I decided on organising a festival themed wedding which would take place outside, I had to look at every single element that would go into the wedding including finances and risk assessments. After a lot of hard work I was able to come up with a proposal which suited the clients whilst also adding my own unique touches. The task was hard and long but I took great enjoyment in and allowed me to understand the passion and flare I had for events organising.
Job title: Radio producer/presenter
In doing my media A-level at college I took it upon me to try all different types of the media. This gave me the opportunity to both produce and present radio. Being a very confident person I thought presenting would be my love, however after getting to try both I became a lover of all things Radio. After helping out both during and after college hours on the college radio station I found I easily picked up the editing software of Adobe audition and can now use it at a very high level. Wanting to continue my love in radio I chose a radio production module in my first year at University where I have been asked to create a five minute radio package based on any topic I wanted, so due to the arrival of a very popular St Patrick’s Day I am going to base it on those celebrating getting the opinions and a real insight to the day from an Irish family friend. Looking into radio in depth I know its not all about the presenting it’s what happens behind the scenes a swell. So I know volunteer as a researcher for the University radio show where I am also keen to get my own show to present. In doing the theory side in my “Radio and Popular music” theory module at uni I have also learnt the histories of radio and how it has developed over time.
Job title: Marketing and PR
For my role at the organisation I was asked to undertake a website imagery review and suggestions on how the website could be improved. The company found they were thinking of great ideas which would bring together a community and help them to become fitter, however they had no platforms to advertise and the imagery used on the website wasn’t a clear representation of what the leisure centres really had to offer. The organisation needed a fresh pair of eyes to come in and investigate changes which could be done in order to make the website better. I looked over several different websites imagery in line with the centre’s demographic analysis and profile, and then to make recommendations for action’s to be taken to improve the imagery.
